The secret of Yixing lies in the "sand". It contains quartz and mica, and other less well-known minerals. Scientific studies have shown that purple sand has different molecular structure compared to other clay types. The clay of Yixing is known collectively as zisha (purple sand), and there are three basic types: zisha, a purplish-brown clay; banshanlu, a buff-coloured clay, and zhusha, a cinnabar or deep orange-red clay. Yixing Zisha (紫砂) — Purple (Zi/紫) Sand (Sha/沙) — is the umbrella term for all raw clay materials found around Dingshuzhen (丁蜀镇), a town near the city of Yixing (宜兴), in the Jiangsu (江苏) province of China.
